Sandman Preludes and Nocturnes

Grade:

Thus begins the epic tale of the Sandman, as written by Neil Gaiman. Although this collection has its moments, it is confused in what it wants to do. It is like a bunch of short stories connected only by a central figure except they are all supposed to add up to an epic road trip. Nothing really seems connected and the storytelling is awkward. For instance, why was the Sandman overwhelmed by his Jewel, but then is able to easily defeat Dr. Destiny who has control of it? Why was his quest to get the Pouch of Sand so simple, he walks into a house which moments earlier is supposed to be full of danger and basically picks up the pouch, end of story. The only object which presents any real chalange for the Sandman is his helmet, the game he plays to get it back is different and well done.

Overall, there are some great mood pieces, the first issue is very well done. But none of it really adds up to anything. The only issue that truly stands out it the final one, which introduces Death. That shows you what is to come. Guest stars are used fairly well and they make sense. Overall this collection is disapointing, especially since I had read a few of the other TPB's before picking up this one. However it does introduce the character and has a few stand out points worth looking at. Don't pay full price, pick it up on e-bay for about 12.00 including shipping, I did that. But stick with the series, it gets better, a lot better I promise.
