Understanding Comics, The Invisible Art

Grade:

Understanding Comics is not a superhero story or anything like that. Think of it as one of the most interesting textbooks you will read.

Scott McCloud guides the reader through the art that is comics. The focus is on storytelling, artwork, narritive flow, history, perspective, and even some humor thrown in. It starts with some of the most basic concepts and eventually moves into higher ideas, like chapter 7 which discusses the general philosophy of the comic medium.

All of this is very fascinating, and the art which guides you is excellent. McCloud fills the panels with details and uses excellent guest artists for examples of many techniques.

I promise, if you read this book there will be atleast one aspect of comics you will never look at the same way again. This book is a work of art, everyone who is interested in comics should own it, especially aspiring writers and artists. The book teachs ideas that you probably never knew existed, like panel transitions. This is a must read.
