John and his brother, Seborn, were
raised by the widow Kimberly after their father was killed. John stayed with her until the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in Baxters
Battery of the 2nd Tennessee Artillery, Buckners Corp, Hoods Army.
John also saw service with Generals Johnson, Forest, Wheeler, and others.
He was engaged in several battles, Nashville, Franklin TN, Shilo, Corinth
MS,
Chickamauga, Atlanta, Rome and
Dalton GA.
