WAKEFIELD Was born near Double Springs January 7, 1882. His father died when William was seven months old. He was converted in a meeting at Union Grove about 1902 and was baptized into Union Grove Church. He later moved his membership to Sardis No. I. Bro. Wakefield was ordained early in 1913 at Sardis No. I. He married Miss Bertie Nix about 1905. Their children have grown to useful men and women of who any couple could be justly glad. Eld. W. S. Wakefield was a very busy pastor especially in the early part of his ministry. He has pastored churches in Winston and Walker Counties. Bro. Wakefield was limited in literary education. It seems very certain that the denomination would have had an able man in him if he had been trained. Strange as it may seem now the majority of our people and many of our preachers when Bro. Wakefield was a young preacher were opposed to preacher preparing for the ministry even when the preacher paid his own way. However, all were not that way. While discussing preacher preparation once Eld. T. P. Sutherland was told by a brother that the Lord would fill the mouth of the preacher without preparation. To which Bro. Sutherland replied: "Yes, he will fill it with air". Elder H. S. Curtis, G. W. Davis, T. P. Sutherland and G. W. Gibson were much in favor those days of special preparation for the ministry. (p 205) Bro. Wakefield has held some long pastorates. He is pastor of one church this year (1956) Bro. Wakefield is a sincere and loveable man.
