AfterM*A*S*H

During the beginging of the last season the seven principal charachters of M*A*S*H voted 4-3 to end the series that season. It finally ended on February 28, 1983 with a 2 and a half hour episode showing the members going home after the war. The three holdouts were  Harry Morgan(Potter), Jamie Farr(Klinger), and William Christopher(Father). Klinger began wondering what he would do at the end of the serial. He discussed this with the other two and finally went to Larry Gelbart who had developed the serial for television and has been the producer for the first four seasons. He developed a sequel including these three and suggested it to 20th Century Fox.

M*A*S*H was doing very well and the first 13 shows of AfterM*A*S*H were bought by CBS without even seeing a pilot episode. The new series was set at General John J. Pershing General V.A. Hospital in (the fictional) River Bend, Missouri. Potter became chief of staff, Klinger was hired as his administrative assistant, and Mulcahy arrived as the hospital's Catholic chaplain. The otherholdover from M*A*S*H was Soon-Lee Klinger (who first  appeared in the next-to-last episode and married Klinger in the finale), who humorously struggled to adjust to American life and theEnglish language. M*A*S*H fans also finally met Potter's frequently-mentioned wife, Mildred.

The sequel series included several entirely new characters. Mike  D'Angelo, a largely two-dimensional character, was the by-the-book  yet ever upbeat-talking hospital administrator at "General General"  (Think Frank Burns without the overt mean-spiritedness.). Alma Cox was his less congenial yet even more by-the-book administrative  assistant who proved to be a constant thorn in Klinger's side (Think Frank Burns with Margaret Houlihan's intelligence.). Dr. Gene Pfeiffer was Potter's trusted young surgical resident. Bob Scannell, one of Potter's old Cavalry buddies who had since become permanent patient at the hospital, was perhaps the series' most consistently funny character. Bonnie Hornbeck was a young secretary who had amorous affections toward Klinger. Lois Foraker portrayed the generic Nurse Coleman (A little-known fact is that Foraker was the fifth person from M*A*S*H to have regular appearances on the sequel. She portrayed Nurse Denver in a few   episodes from the original series, including "The Smell of Music"   and "What's Up Doc?" from the sixth season.)

The series often mentioned past M*A*S*H characters and Gary Burghoff returned as Radar in episode 15 and 16. The seried did very well in its first season. However due to bad tinkering in the second season its ratings fell and it finally was cancelled by CBS after just 30 episodes.
