2000-10-17 Tuesday

It's been an interesting day today. This morning was rainy but not too cold. There are still some wonderful fall colors on the trees, but it would look better on a sunnier day.

I’ve listened to nearly all of The Bomb by Theodore Taylor.

I've been searching up several pages on Bikini Atoll and Atomic tests in general. Lots of good stuff out there on the net. I’ll try and add a link or two to some of the better ones.
It's amazing how arrogant Americans are. It's disappointing to me sometimes to be one.
I also looked up Solaris and read several reviews of the film. (I didn’t know that the author of the book, Stanislaw Lem, was still writing. I may look for a book or two of his. ) I want to see this film and understand it. I've not seen anything directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Too bad that the DVD release was cancelled. Still, I think the entire version in widescreen is available on VHS with subtitles.

I first read about Solaris back in 1978 or so when I picked up the book Science Fiction Films. It contained a brief write up and a few photos. One featured a very realist looking space suit. Back in the mid-1990’s or earlier, Matt and I went into a video store in Gahanna and there was a copy for rental. I don’t know what version that would have been. But I did comment to him about how it was something of a classic.

I also looked up Godel, Escher, Bach : An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas R. Hofstadter. Both Chris and Matt talked about this book. Matt said that a friend of his quit college after reading it. I’ll have to relate this to Matt and see what he remembers of this conversation.

I also found a piece of music for Marlinn: It was used in Excalibur
"O Fortuna"
from Carmina Burana
by Carl Orff
Performed by The Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus
Conducted by Herbert Kegel
Courtesy of Polygram Records
I finished The Bomb on the way home. That makes nineteen books on tape this year and this was the third one by Theodore Taylor.

2000-10-18 Wednesday

I listened to both sides of Dr. Murrary Banks on the way home.

Passing through Reynoldsburg, I went to Blockbuster on Broad Street. It was so small that they didn't carry Solaris or The Lathe of Heaven. I'll try the larger store on Main Street tomorrow.

I stopped off at the Library and checked out my 21st book on tape: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. We've had this in hardback almost since it came out, but I've never read it. Tammy is re-reading it and wanted me to follow along on tape at the same time.

I also checked out two books on writing:
Back in 1998 and 1999, I read a couple of books on writing. Now to just put it into practice.

We missed Star Trek: Voyager tonight. This was the 3rd episode of the last season.

2000-10-19 Thursday

Ad Critic now has a larger version of the voting booth commercial than is running at the official Snickers site. I think it's a riot!
I invented pants.
I spoke with Chris today about movies and books and such. He's only in one day a week. I mentioned Solaris because its been on my mind recently. He hadn't seen it, but could name the author. He said he's read around six books by Stanislaw Lem and says that his humor is wonderful. Chris amazes me. He enjoys the obscure.
This afternoon, Eric came up with a term for what I am doing when I talk about a multiude of things. He said I'm Clavenizing. Named after Cliff Claven from Cheers. He said that it's not bad, because I'm talking about interesting things.
I'm listening to Shawn Colvin's a few small repairs. The only song that I can still get into is Sunny Came Home. This song goes back to when I worked for Oracle and was in Detroit for the first assignment on the DRMS project. Several of us were staying in Riverfront apartments and I was listening to CIDR 93.9 The River in the mornings. I remember many days waking up as the sun rose over Windsor and Detroit and listening to this.

According to an article in the Detroit Free Press The River switched formats from adult alternative to light rock back in late August 2000.

Plus, both

www.theriver939.com and www.smoothrock939.com

have some kind of password access now.

I wish I'd snagged their old banner graphic of the Detroit River and both city skylines. It was very good picture....
MSgt Enyart, back at Randolph AFB used to listen to Shawn Colvin too. I wonder what his impressions are for this album?

(There are several places in this entry that I want change to internal links once I've built more structure.)
It's been an absolutely perfect day. I thought Indian Summer had all but gone.

I'm listening to the other version of Homer by Miracle Legion. What is this from?

2000-10-20 Friday

I didn't listen to any of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus today. Tammy wanted to catch up in the book.

I brought in Office Space to loan to Marvin, but he's already seen it.

mamie

Today is Mamie's last day. Bummer!

She brought us some White Castles for lunch and handed out some Chinese dried plums.
I started on my 5th notebook for my Crosspad.

Back in mid September, I sumbitted a review of the Penny CD on YesAsia.com. We bought this CD when we were in China in March. After checking today, I saw that my review has been posted. Click on Penny's name to read it and see details about the CD.

The same day that I posted the above review, another CD that Tammy ordered for me as a birthday present arrived. It is by Tanya Chua. She is the artist that we were trying to find originally when shopping for music in China. Click on Tanya's name to see details about her CD.

Delainie went as a lady bug for Halloween.

We only went up one street and down the other.

She was a little leary of people, but it was fun.
