Message from the Golf Committee

Dear Members,

Our two biggest tournaments of the year, the Club Championship and the Russian Open, have passed with great success, and the Golf Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make them such a success. Golf and clubhouse staff together with a large number of members and visiting marshals joined forces to pull off two great events. Compliments highlighting the level of organization and enthusiasm were abound, and we made a real impression on a lot of visiting pros and PGA staff.

Well done, MCC !!

Russian Open - 1998

Despite bad weather in the days leading up to the event, the Russian Open was a smashing success – more than 130 professionals from Europe arrived to test Russia’s now world famous championship course.

Two of the four tourney days provided great weather, and scores were impressive. In the end, Englishman Warren Bennet took the crown with a tournament record 18 under par score of 270. On Sunday, during the final round with pressure mounting, he broke the course record by shooting an 8 under par 64.

Club Champs- 1998

The 1998 MCC Club Championships, held over the week-end of August 1-2 and sponsored by DeBeers, also proved popular as over 80 members competed.

For the first time in MCC history, Russians led the way to the podium in both the men’s and women’s tourneys.

Vladimir Rasskazov played a solid second round to shoot 156 (80-76) and fend off first round leader Mr. Park to capture the men’s title. In the women’s event, Natasha Neirynck won by a thin margin - just one stroke - over Natalya Gamper.

Final results:

Men’s Event

Club Champion – V. Rasskazov

Runner-up – B.W. Park

3d Place – Mark Maurer

B Divison Gross – D.S. Song

C Division Gross – Charles Parker

Best Net – Shane Torr

Women’s Event

Club Champion – N. Neirynck

Runner-up – N. Gamper

Best Net – N. Barsukova

Congratulations !!

Reminders – Again !!

We also have a few housekeeping reminders – also found in the last issue – but seemingly ignored. Please, we request your utmost cooperation with the following !!!!

*Speed of play. Please try to keep up with the group in front of you and finish your round within 4 hours 15 minutes !! Also, please adhere to the Marshal’s requests !!

*Ballmarks. Please fix all ballmarks on the greens – if you have a moment, look for ones other than your own.

*Divots – please replace them !!

*Range balls. Do not take range balls onto the course – we have found many, especially in the water along the fifth hole. The disciplinary committee is considering action for such violations. We have already lost 500 this year !!

*Keep the course clean. Please do not litter and pick up any loose trash you see on the course and deposit it in the next hole’s waste basket !

*Mushroom Pickers. We’re working on this – we know they are everywhere. In addition to being a nuisance, they are at risk of a stray shot – please help by instructing them to stay off the course.

This week: Russian Cup

This week-end at MCC you may see a few unfamiliar faces with swings immune to Russia’s looming financial crisis – they belong to visiting Eastern European pros in town to compete in the first annual Russian Cup.

The Russian Cup, organized by the Russian Association of Professional Golfers, is a three day event for both pros and MCC members. Total prize money for professionals is $3,000. The 65 MCC members scheduled to compete will enjoy a dinner and prize giving Sunday afternoon.
