JavaScript is a client-side scripting language developed by Netscape which is usually embedded within HTML files.
With JavaScript you can make graphics change when you move the mouse over them or click on them.
There are also mathematical functions, time and date functions etc. which let you make dynamic web pages with added functionality, such as clocks, calendars and calculators. Unfortunately, client-side JavaScript does not let you manipulate files - so data cannot usually be stored either on the WWW server or on the hard disk of the browser. On the other hand, this means that JavaScripts pose a relatively low security risk.
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) is a method for producing interactive WWW pages where the input is taken from clickable image-map pictures or fill-out forms. CGI scripts need to be written carefully to avoid security loopholes. Your WWW site might not allow you to set up your own CGI scripts.
PERL (Practical Extraction and Report Language) is the creation of Larry Wall.
PERL is probably the best scripting language and is particularly well suited for CGI scripts and processing text files, as well as general system admin tasks.
It originated on the UNIX platform and has since been ported to many other platforms including Macintosh and PC.
