The Boy-summoner's Tale 

Zagato was walking in the Forest of
Silence when he came upon a small
boy playing with - of all things! -
the biggest monstrosities on the face
of Cephiro!

The homeless child proved to be a Bal,
the last of a proud tribe of sorcerers
with the power to control the minds of
spirit-beasts.  And, he seemed to be 
the most powerful of all Bals who had
ever trod the face of Cephiro.

Thus, Ascot joined Zagato's army of
minions, a formidable opponent to
anyone foolhardy enough to face a
seijyu...

Bal Ascot 

This guy with the way-cool hair (?) was around three feet tall in the
original series and just grew up in the second series!

Ascot is a Bal, a spirit-summoner.  He has supreme control over nearly
all the seijyu in Cephiro.

Homeless as a child, Zagato offered to let him and his pets live in the
Pillar's Palace of Glass if - and only IF!!! - he gets rid of the 
Magic Knights.  He fails, but gains the friendship of the girls and the
love of Umi Ryuuzaki.  It's a love that causes his heart to mature and
his stature to grow from that of a child to that of a handsome young
man.

Incidentally, the orphaned Ascot is under the care of Caldina and 
Lafarga.
