Nick Cave releases Greatest Hits
the disc will include tracks from the 15 year's spent as a Bad Seed starting with 1984's From Her To Eternity,.
Mute Records calls Cave "a serious adult artist" and hopes a limited-edition version, which will include a nine-track live album from two Royal Albert Hall dates last May, will also appeal to longstanding fans. Mute is planning a heavyweight marketing campaign to back the album including radio spots, out in Britain May 11.
Sony & Warner's Tie the knot in U.K
Two Industry Mega-liths are consolidating distribution, a first for competitive members of the Big 5 distributors. Sony and Warner are merging their U.K distribution operations in a potentially cost-saving & ground-breaking tie-up between the two majors. the deal has been 15 months on the drawing table before being finalized in April.
Big Golden Soul Smog Star Asylum
While Soul Asylum front man Dave Pirner frets about the commercial potential of the new album just released on Sony/Columbia, fellow band member Dan Murphy is also looking forward to the new Golden Smog album fermenting in the works. Big Star drummer Jody Stevens has joined the quasi super group and hopefully the band will get a chance to flaunt their live stuff between the Wilco and Soul Asylum promo machinations.
Because Golden Smog's members have such difficult schedules with their full-time bands, assembling their long-awaited follow-up to Down by the Old Mainstream has been quite a chore. Some recording was done in a ten-day span more than a year ago, and another week of recording was squeezed in this past February. The record's release—slated for late summer or early fall on an as-yet-undetermined label—depends largely on the upcoming Wilco and Soul Asylum records: Golden Smog's disc must be released before or after those albums by at least two months. After releasing its second full-length disc, the collective plans to "tour a couple of weeks straight and do some one-offs here and there, both domestically and abroad," according to Stephens. Golden smog's mutating line-up currently features the Jayhawks' Marc Perlman and Gary Louris, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Soul Asylum's Dan Murphy, and Geraldine Fibbers' Jesse Green. "I look for a good time in music," says Stephens, "with no fuss, no egos, and no bad habits. And these guys sure emphasize having a good time."
Jody has another project in the works. This August, he will finally see the release of the long-awaited Big Star tribute album Big Star, Small World, which is coming out through Ignition Records. The roster of songs and the bands covering them looks like this: - "Back of a Car," Gin Blossoms;
- "Nighttime," Afghan Whigs;
- "When My Baby’s Beside Me," Kelly Willis;
- "Don’t Lie to Me," Juliana Hatfield;
- "Give Me Another Chance," Whiskeytown;
- "Ballad of El Goodo," Matthew Sweet with Chris Stamey and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills;
- "You Get What You Deserve," Idle Wilds;
- "Jesus Christ," Teenage Fanclub;
- "September Gurls," Sister Hazel;
and - "Thirteen," Wilco.
The album will also feature "Hot Thing," the first new Big Star song in three decades, performed by Stephens, band leader Alex Chilton, and the Posies' Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer. Stephens says that the same Big Star lineup—with Auer and Stringfellow guesting—will perform a handful of dates in major urban centers in the fall. Among the cities named: New York, San Francisco, and Chicago.

R.I.P: Wendy O. Williams, 48
The leader of the Plasmatics (1978-87) was found dead in early april of 1998 in a wooded area near her Connecticut home, victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Williams was a bad girl for a bad band: She wore a Mohawk haircut, had a filthy mouth, and her acts featured noise, sex, and violence (sledgehammers and chainsaws were frequent props) that for a time was provocative.
Tim Yohannon R.I.P
the cranky zinester behind the infamous Maximum Rock-n-Roll publishing empire passed in early April due to an ongoing battle with lung cancer that devastated his immune system. Never spotted without an opinion or that pervasive pack of Pall Malls, he was an organizational genius with great influence over the direction of punk music for at least 15 years. He will be missed greatly by those who knew his work and resourcefulness. Band's such as Rancid, Green Day (and even NOFX if they'd dare admit it,) all owe a great deal to MRR's fueling of the hardcore fires during the scene's leanest of times.,br>
George Michael Busted
The man who sang I Want Your Sex was arrested by undercover cops in the restroom of a Beverly Hills park in early April. He was booked on a Tuesday evening on “disorderly conduct charges for the alleged solo performance of a lewd act”,/b>. He'll be arraigned on 5 May.
...Kraftwerk heads out on a mini-tour June 7-14 with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago in 2,000 to 3,000-capacity venues as a warm-up for a full tour to begin early next year. CAA’s Chris Dalston is handling the booking...Pearl Jam’s Sept. 10 Madison Square Garden date sold out in 22 minutes.
Axl Rose managed to get himself ina bit of childish trouble at the Southwest Airlines terminal in Phoenix back in February a few days after his 35th birthday. Apparently rose refused security personnel access to his carry-on which contained a “a dark object”. Rose began getting abusive and told an officer who warned him if he didn’t calm down he’d be going to jail “ I don’t give a fuck, take me to jail! You are all little people on a power trip…”
His female companion was remanded custody of the quasi-controversial carry-on, Axl was booked…,br>
Meanwhile , very little info trickles out on the progress of that new G-n-R album in the works with a new hired studio geek pack.
Debbie Harry of Blondie often sees the looks she pioneered turning up on the designer catwalks. "I recycled everything anyway," she said at a recent Betsey Johnson show. She is still a model of contemporary chic - combining shiny silver hair with a fuzzy black jumper and jeans. "Fashion is just one big cocktail, it's the way you blend it that makes the difference."
Her new album will be released in the summer

By David Pemberton of Daily Telegraph U.K
SYNTHESIZER pioneer Bob Moog and electronic dance act Orbital formed an unlikely pairing for the opening of a £1 million centre dedicated to dance music technology.
Housed in the basement of the Turnkey music shop in Soho, London, the centrepiece of the Loopstation project is a huge "mega-synthesizer". Featuring a host of rare vintage analogue synthesizers from legendary manufacturers such as Moog, ARP, EMS, Oberheim and Roland, the mega-synthesizer fills one entire wall of the store.
The project serves both as a museum piece charting the history of analogue synthesizers and as a practical sound source; customers are allowed to use the wall of machines free of charge, downloading sounds to feed into their samplers at home. Given that the limited availability and current vogue for antique synthesizers has put a lot of this equipment out of the price range of most bedroom producers, it should, as the founders hope, give musicians access to sounds that were previously unavailable.
"It's wonderful to see all these old analogue synthesizers," said Orbital's Phil Hartnoll. "It reminds me of the children's bit at the science museum where you can go downstairs and press the knobs and twist buttons and make funny noises, which is essentially what this does, I guess." Daniel Pemberton UK daily electronic telegraph site
