SEEKING

 “I’m not your father.”

 Anna stared at the only parent she had ever known.  “I don’t understand.”

 “I couldn’t love you more.”  There were tears in his eyes.

 “Why tell me now?”

 “It will soon be time.”

 “Time for what?”

 “For you to leave, to return to your people.”

 “You are my people.”

 “I have been your guardian.”

 She took his hand.  “Who then are my people?”

 His sharp eyes could see the beginnings of change on her neck.

 He led her through the sand to the sea’s rocky edge and pointed .

 “Out there,” he said.  “You’re a mermaid.”
