Fire Damages Ashland Union Depot

April 1, 2000, Ashland, WI -- On this day the former Soo Line/Northern Pacific Railway Union Depot in Ashland, WI was severly damaged by fire. The fire started in the "Railyard Brewpub" located in the first floor of the west wing. Damage is well over a million dollars, though the owners and tenants are committed to rebuilding. This page provides some photos I took of the damaged depot in June of 2000, along with links to stories from the Ashland, WI "Daily Press".

View from the rear of the depot. This was taken just south of where the turntable and roundhouse had been.

View from the front of the depot. Damage to the roof and tower is extensive.

Closeup of the tower. Damage is severe (note the beam stuck into the roof of the entry) but the antique Soo Line sign is, if not intact, at least not a total loss.
