picked up the ball and slamed it into the net. That's all I'm gonna write about it.

Do you have any idea what's happening with Irina Spirlea? I thought
she started the year pretty well, but then starting at the Australian
Open she's just losing to pretty much anybody she's playing. Is she
injured?
—Mona Berciu, Baia Mare, Romania

Spirlea has had generally lousy results for a while now. She just won the
doubles at Gaz de France, so to the best of my knowledge she's not injured.
I like her game a lot -- big, Graf-like forehand, lots of trick shots, nice
hands, and she's also deceptively tall -- but she's not going to make anyone's
short list of mentally tough players. She has a wicked temper, she's thrown
off by bad calls, and I've noticed that when she's losing she plays points too
quickly. Still, like a female Yevgeny Kafelnikov, she's precisely the kind of
player who's wildly talented and can get hot and tear through a draw.

Australian Open

See Irina's Draw

1st round: Huber def.
Spirlea(13), 7-5, 6-4

Darnit, another 1st round lost in Melbourne. Anke says the Irina was not really
into the game, insinuating that maybe Irina was tired from her sickness
for the last two weeks.

Once again Irina gets a bad draw, but she did beat Anke two weeks ago, let's hope she's feeling
better. Potential meeting with Venus in the Quarters.
1/21 1st round: Spirlea/Vis (8), def. Csurgo/Kim, 6-1, 6-2
1/23 2nd round: Arendt/Bollegraf def. Spirlea/Vis, 7-5, 7-5
