1997
Mankind was teamed with Paul Bearer's other man, Vader… Vader and Mankind met Owen Hart and Davey-Boy Smith at Wrestlemania, and were defeated because of problems getting along… When the Undertaker won the World title, Paul Bearer sent Mankind after him again to try to bring him under Paul's control. Mankind lost the match in April, and Paul dropped Mankind. Mankind didn't understand why "Uncle Paul" wouldn't talk to him anymore… Mankind went to the finals of King of the Ring, and lost to Hunter Hearst Helmsley… Helmsley and Mankind met again in July, and wrestled to a double-countout… "Stone Cold" Steve Austin needed a tag partner for a match against Owen Hart and Davey-Boy Smith for the vacant tag titles. Mankind began wearing a "Pick Me Steve" sign… Mankind rescued Austin from a Hart Foundation attack. Austin agreed to let Mankind be his partner. But then, Austin put the Stone Cold Stunner on Mankind, and told him "Don't trust anybody", and that he didn't want a freak as a tag partner… The following week, Austin was wrestling alone for the tag titles, when Foley in sunglasses and tye-dye appeared. Foley told him that he didn't blame him for rejecting Mankind, but Austin never said anything about "Dude Love". Dude Love and Austin won the titles, and Austin accepted Dude Love… At Summerslam, Mankind met Helmsley in a cage match. Partway through the match, Mankind took off his mask, and pulled off his shirt to reveal tye-dye underneath, making the transition to Dude Love to win the match… Steve Austin was injured at SummerSlam, and Dude Love and Austin had to surrender the titles… Dude Love and Helmsley were to have a falls-count-anywhere match in October, but Dude Love said that falls-count-anywhere wasn't his "bag", and offered the match to Mankind. Mankind appreciated the offer, but suggested the person that would love a falls-count-anywhere match was Cactus Jack. Cactus Jack returned after a year-and-a-half absence to a victory over Hunter Hearst Helmsley… Mankind challenged Kain at Survivor Series, but was not able to overcome him… Cactus Jack met the New Age Outlaws in one-on-one matches in December, but kept getting double-teamed by the duo.
1998
Cactus Jack brought in Terry Funk as Chainsaw Charlie to help him out with the New Age Outlaws… Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack all competed in the Royal Rumble… In February, the "Hardcore Legends" met in a one-on-one match to decide who was "King of the Hardcores". Partway through the match, Jack dropped an elbow on Charlie who was in a dumpster. The Outlaws tied the dumpster shut and pushed it off of a ten foot stage, sending the Legends to the hospital… At Wrestlemania, the Legends took the belts from the Outlaws in a dumpster match… The titles were held up the next night because the wrong dumpster was used to win the match. The rematch in a cage was won by the Outlaws, with the help of their newly revealed Degeneration X teammates…. Cactus Jack came out the following week to announce that he was bitter that when the Legends were being pounded, that the crowd was chanting Steve Austin. When the crowd did not apologize, Foley announced that it would be a long time before the fans saw Cactus Jack again… Dude Love appeared the following week to interrupt a match between Steve Austin and Vince McMahon. Dude Love tried to put the mandible claw on McMahon, and then attacked Steve Austin, who had one hand tied behind his back for the match with McMahon… Dude Love beat Austin by DQ in a match a couple of weeks later when Austin was disqualified for smacking McMahon in the head with a chair… McMahon had apparently promised that Dude Love would wear the belt one way or another, and Dude became bitter with both McMahon and Austin when TAFKA Goldust got a title match the next night. Goldust became angry and shed his gimmick a couple of weeks later, and targeted Dude for vengeance… The following week, Dude stripped himself of all gimmicks and declared that from then on he would just be Mick Foley. McMahon offered Foley the #1 contender spot if he could "rip out his best friends heart and hand it to him." Foley defeated his partner Terry Funk, officially dissolving their relationship, and then accepted the Dude Love persona again… Dude Love became the model employee that Austin refused to be. For this second title shot, this time at In Your House: Over The Edge, the deck was completely stacked against Austin. McMahon was the special guest referee, and his "lieutenants" Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco were the ring announcer and timekeeper, respectively. Austin won this match as well, after Dude blasted McMahon with a chairshot. After this defeat, Foley was told that "his services were no longer needed" by McMahon, but this turned out to be a ruse. Mick's longtime nemesis, the Undertaker demanded a WWF title shot on this same Raw. McMahon told him that he could earn one by defeating his brother, Kane. During this match, Mick made his return, but this time as MANKIND, costing Undertaker the loss. Soon after this, a Hell in the Cell match was set between Undertaker and Mankind for King of the Ring. 2 weeks prior to King of the Ring, a tag team battle royal to determine the top contenders to the WWF tag titles was won by Mankind and his new ally Kane. At King of the Ring, Mick put on what may have been the best match of his career, with some of the most hardcore bumps he's taken in his WWF tenure thus far. Early on, he was thrown from the TOP of the Cell, through the Spanish announcers' table!!! Amazingly, he was still alive after this, and ended up back on top of the cage again, where he was chokeslammed THROUGH THE ROOF. Later in the match, thumbtacks were brought into the ring, and Foley was backdropped and chokeslammed on them, ala IWA. Foley was eventually tombstoned and pinned, but the mere fact that he LIVED was amazing. Althought Foley was alive he sustained some major injuries. He had a concussion, dislocated ribs, a dislocated shoulder and jaw, (his jaw was put back in place while he was unconscience) approximately 15 stitches under his lip, and deep tissue injury, which is very painful according to Mick (i'll take his word on it). Apparently when the Undertaker chokeslamed him through the top of the cage he blanked out and was so for the remainder of the match. According to Mick the after match converstion he had with the Undertaker went something like this "Did I use tacks in that match?" Foley refused to go to the hospital because he wanted to be involved with the Austin, Kane match. Finally they took him to a Pittsburgh hospital for medical attention. Amazingly Foley was at RAW the next day, but not in competition. Once again Foley showed how dedicated he is to this sport we call Professional Wrestling. Mick went on to be the Hardcore Champion and then he won the WWF Championship belt on RAW.
