Out of Sight

Starring: George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, and Albert Brooks
Dir. Steven Soderbergh

In the first scene in Out of Sight George Clooney storms out of a building, rips his tie off and throws it to the ground. Now, why is he so mad you ask. Well it takes almost the whole movie to figure out why. Directed with flair by Steven Soderbergh, most known for sex, lies, and videotape, this movie's stars are just as sweltering as the heat that they are in Miami. The movie itself is plot-thick, meaning that it jumps around, and at points you don't know what is going on. Back around September, I read the novel of the same name, and I can honestly tell you that this movie captures all the heat and action the book had. Is the book better than the movie? Well, yes and no. Yes because it explains the situation much better. No, just based on the performances of Lopez and Clooney, their performances are outstanding and rich. This, if any, is Clooney's star turn. There is also a couple of laugh out loud hilarious scenes, most brought by the pot smoking Glen (Steve Zahn), and Buddy (Ving Rhames). How, may you ask does a fugitive and a U.S. Marshal fall in love? And the answer: car trunks, drug lords, and millions and millions of dollars. Of course that doesn't make any sense but if you see the movie it will all unfold. Besides Clooney's "star-making" performance, Lopez's is just as good if not better. She plays Marshal Karen Sisco, and her decision to be with Jack (Clooney) or turn him in will keep you guessing until the end. Watch for cameo performances by Michael Keaton (hilarious) and Samuel L. Jackson. B+
