Patch Adams
Starring: Robin Williams, Monica Potter, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bob Guton
Dir. Tom Shadyac
Robin Williams' voice is first heard in the beginning few moments of this film he is talking a soft, low voice and makes you feel calm. He is explaining to you why he decided to check himself into a psychiatric hospital. He is suicidal and doesn't know where his life is going. One night, in a particulary poignant scene, he helps his roommate recover from his fears of "squirrels". It is then that Hunter "Patch" Adams learns that he wants to help people solve their problems which helps him cope with his. He checks himself out of the hospital and checks himself into college. It is at college where the rest of this movie evolves. Including his friendship, his love, and his Gesundheit Institute. Patch's philosphy is heal people through laughter. He butts heads with the dean on this philosophy and his roommate (Hoffman). Patch Adams is a funny and touching film which sometimes pulls the heart a little too much. In one scene, which I don't want to reveal because it's just too damn important, Patch's reading of poetry tears your heart out. Robin Williams and Monica Potter pull in what should be award winning performances. B+
