He pulled up to the house and parked the car. He would have given
anything not to be here. Scully had offered to come with him but Mulder
knew this was something he had to do on his own. He almost wished
she were here now. He didn’t want to get out of the car and have
to face her. He could already see the tears in her eyes. The pain. The
heart break he was going to put her through.
He looked out his window and the rain running down the glass.
Each drop collected many more droplets yet still it continued to slide
down. The speed at which it fell increased as more water gathered and
soon, it all fell to the bottom there by forgotten.
He opened the car door slowly and climbed out. The rain gently beat
down on him as if God was some kind of mercy. No matter the meekness
of his offering. Mulder made his way up to the door and looked behind him
once more before knocking. He could hear her footsteps coming closer and
shut his eyes as the door opened.
        "Fox." Teena noted, mildly surprised.
"Hi mom." Mulder tried to smile as she stepped aside to let
him inside. He saw her disappear into the kitchen. He looked around the
house as his mother came back wiping her hands on a cloth.
"Just finishing some cookies for the neighbors kids." She
explained as they walked into the den. "They came over last week and
helped me finish some gardening." She continued crossing her legs.
Mulder nodded thinking back to his childhood. He could remember one
time when his mother had made Samantha and him cookies. It was early
April and he had taken Samantha out to the park. They had gotten home and
found his mom carrying a pan of warm chocolate chip cookies. He and
Samantha had gone out to a tire swing he had set up for her on one of their
huge trees. They sat there together laughing as he pushed her and they
ate. He remembered coming in later that evening and her mother seeing
Sam’s face covered with chocolate.
Mulder smiled as his eyes watered at the memory. He wished he had
more memories like that one. His mind was filled with what their family was
like after Samantha had been taken.
"Fox what is it?" Teena noticed his eyes were glistening and
he was looking down. This was it. He had to tell her. What was he going to
say? He was worried he couldn’t speak to try and get the words out.
He wet his lips and spoke.
"Mom I need to tell you something." He took her hands in his
as he looked up. The lump in his throat was tightening with every word he
coughed out.
"What is it Fox?" The old asked more anxiously, looking into
his eyes. God he couldn’t do this. He couldn’t speak the words
to tell her. He swallowed again and tried once more.
"It’s about Sam." At this Teena took her hands from her
son’s and stood angrily.
"I told you everything I know. You have no right to come here and
question me!" She spat out hatefully. Mulder didn’t make a sound.
He wanted to let the tears that threaten to fall, spill out. He stood then
but stayed where he was.
        "Mom. It’s not--"
"No Fox. I have nothing to tell you. You know this isn’t good
for me. Getting my blood pressure up. Now why don’t--"
"Mom she’s dead. Sam--" he stopped seeing the look
on hismother’s face. It started out as unbelief, then sadness, but changed
to then to anger. "I saw." He couldn’t get the words out now that
his mother was staring at him coldly.
"Get out." She ordered sternly. His eyes stung as more tears
blurred his vision.
"Mom I just--" He tried but was soon cut off again.
"Get out now!" She screamed as her own eyes watered. He didn’t
know what was going on and the confusion was making things worse. He
wanted to fall to his knees and let the tears spill. To scream to her
how sorry he was. He walked up and tried to draw her into his arms
but she threw him off as though she were repelled by his touch.
"Get out now! It should have been you! Not my baby girl!"
She cried storming up stairs.
Her words cut through him like a jagged knife. His legs felt
like they were about to give out on him and he stumbled out as
quickly as he could.
The rain beat down on him hard and he had his mouth open
sucking in air. His heart hurt. He felt so ashamed. He could see his car
as he tripped toward it. He tried to hold back the tears. Just until he got
into his car. She had ripped apart his soul with just one sentence. He
gulped in another mouthful of air and let a sob escape. That was all it
took. He fell to pieces right in front of his mother’s house. He sunk
to the ground as he let his tears fall and mix with the pounding rain. He
felt sick to his stomach at the realization that he had ruined Samantha’s
chance at life. She had been his Samantha. His baby sister with piggy
tails. His. His delicate angel. Yet he had let her go. Something so lovely,
so innocent, so pure. She had been his baby sister. She was his beauty.
He was supposed to be her big brother. The one she had counted on.
The one she had yelled to. The one she had cried out to.
The one that didn’t save her.
