Oscar Wilde era irlandês de Dublin. Em 1874 recebeu seu primeiro prêmio pelo poema Ravenna, tornando-se conhecido como autor.

Crítico de seu tempo era satirizado pelos seu gosto excêntrico,suas idéias anarquistas e seu homossexualismo, custando-lhe um processo.
No romance O retrato de Dorian Gray( The portrait of Dorian Gray) apresenta sua visão em relação sobre as relações humanas e a estética.
Recentemente,no Reino Unido, deixou de ser autor "non-grato"nas escolas, sendo seus livros então no ensino secundário.
