Sometimes the body is weaker than the soul.
In their darkest hour I made a promise

If you are fortunate in your student years to have a special teacher that you'll always remember and cherish, that someone for thousands of Ramsey students would be Karen Ege, art teacher.

Although her time with us was brief, she won't be forgotten. She touched the lives of her many students all in a special way. Karen was also a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and especially a friend.

She spent 33 years at Dater Hubbard, Tisdale, Smith and Ramsey High School and will never be forgotten by those whose lives are richer today for her guiding hands.

We thank you Karen, for your sweetness, your talents and your example of courage. Your great spirit will live on in our memories.


On August 31,2001, with her husband by her side, Karen Joy Ege peacefully lost her long courageous battle with cancer at the age of 56.

Karen was a graduate of Montclair State University and a member of the Sigma Delta Phi Sorority. Karen was a parishioner of Guardian Angel Church in Allendale N.J. In addition to her teaching, Karen was the Right to Know coordinator from 1987-1992. Karen won the Governor's award as Teacher of the Year in 1989. She was involved in many fine arts festivals over the years. The Fine Arts Supervisor praised her "special kind of enthusiasm, she loved to watch students learn."


Shortly before Christmas 2000, Karen learned that the cancer had spread and that a recovery was unlikely. Instead of taking to her bed and indulging in self pity, she made beautiful Christmas wreaths for her friends and neighbors and asked her son to deliver the festive gifts with the message: "Mom wants everyone to have a happy Christmas". It was then we all realized that her time with us will be short. We admired her for not wanting to spoil anyone's Christmas with her sad news.

I was amazed how she endured the discomfort of her treatments and still lived each day to it's fullest til her very last day. Even on her death bed she continued her concern for others by asking her family to watch over particular friends while she was gone.

Her passing has left a void in so many lives. She touched the hearts of all she met during her short life time, and was truly truly loved. There is no doubt that she was in deed a living angel. Those who's hearts and lives she had touched feel truly blessed.

Karen will be dearly missed by her husband 'Big' Rich and her two sons 'Little' Rich and Christopher, her 39 cousins, 18 aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, students, and countless friends.
An Art Scholarship Fund to benefit Ramsey High School Students has been established in Karen's memory.

Nearly three thousand mourners came to say good-bye to their special angel. I know Karen was there in spirit and so proud that she touched so many lives.

May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. "I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
