Huckleberry Finn

After finishing Huckleberry Finn, there are still many actions in the book that I do not agree with, and that I question. I do not agree with how Jim did not tell Huck that he found his father dead. I also still question Tom as a character, and I question the way the book ends. On the other hand I think that this was a good book because I as a reader could understand the actions of Tom and Huck. I think that all in all this was a good book, but there are a couple things that I am not clear about.

The part in the book that disturbed me the most was when Jim found HuckÕs father dead but he did not tell Huck. I know that Huck is young and very vulnerable, but I still think that he has the right to know that his father is dead. In todayÕs society if someone is killed the family is informed quickly no matter what. On the opposing side it would have been a big shock for Huck, and believe it or not I think that Huck would of been very effected by it.

Tom Sawyer is one of the main characters in this book. He is a young boy who is always looking for adventure, and action. For an example, when Tom and Huck wanted to free Jim, Huck wanted to get the keys and just let him out, but Tom on the other hand wanted to dig a hole and climb through it, into the shed where Jim was and then escape. This time Huck listened to him, and they tried Toms idea and it worked for the most part. To me Tom SawyerÕs life is just like a big fairy tale. All Tom wants to do is have some excitement in his life, and overcome a challenge. When Tom gets shot in the leg his fairy tale life comes to an end. However showing how emotionally, and physically strong Tom is he wears the bullet that shot him, as a necklace. The ironic thing is that Tom got shot while trying to help Jim to safety. It is ironic because Tom is just trying to continue his " fairy tale" life, and gets injured while trying to do something nice for someone. I think that Tom is a strong courageous character in Huckleberry Finn.I was very, very disappointed in the way that the book ends. It seemed to me that the book came to an abrupt halt, and then it was over. Right after Tom, Huck, and Jim get back from trying to run away it seems that the book ends. My idea would of been to make that part the climax of the story and possibly the half way point as well. I have read many historical books like Huckleberry Finn, and this was without a doubt the worst ending to a book that I have ever read. I do not mean to be critical, but it is like Mark Twain gets everyone excited with having Jim try to run away and then the book ends.

The most positive aspect of this book was the relationship between Tom, Huck, and the readers. As a teenager I was able to connect and understand where most of their actions came from. I think that Mark Twain did a good stereotype of male teenagers in this book. I am wondering on how old Twain was when he wrote this book.

In conclusion I feel that for the most part Huckleberry Finn was a good book. It had a lot of little things to pick on here and there, but that is the same for every book. I think that with a better ending this could be one of if not the greatest adventure book ever.
