Devil In A Blue Dress - A Review

Not a big fan of the genre, I have never been over keen on ‘Devil In A Blue Dress.’ Since buying my copy when it was released on video in 1997, I have only watched it three times. Viewing it again for this review, my opinion has changed considerably.

Easy Rawlins (Denzel Washington) is down on his luck and recently unemployed. A chance meeting with DeWitt Albright (Tom), finds easy back in pocket and on a wild goose-chase to find a woman he’s never met, named Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals).

When a mutual friend of Daphne and Easy’s is murdered soon after Easy has left her side, Easy begins to have doubts over the legitimacy of Albright’s task.

DeWitt Albright is an intimidating, mysterious fellow, with a short fuse. Lying somewhere between disturbing and psychotic, Albright really adds tension to the film and, holding a bread knife to Easy’s eye really get’s the viewer flinching. Naturally Tom’s performance is fantastic.

In the past I had always found this film quite tedious but ‘Devil In A Blue Dress’ has a sterling cast, an intelligent, unpredictable storyline and is beautifully filmed. It’s just a shame it took me so long to grasp the fact. If you made the same initial conclusion, give it another try.
