Striking Distance - A Review

Ex-homicide detective Tom Hardy, (Bruce Willis), is reviled by colleagues and family alike, following a very public act of disloyalty to his partner and cousin Jimmy Detillo, (Robert Pastorelli).

When Hardy’s father, (played by John Mahoney), is murdered by The Polish Hill Strangler and Jimmy throws himself from a bridge, he becomes an alcoholic wreck. Finally emerging, he has been demoted to a member of the River Rescue Patrol.

Despite his uncle Nick’s, (Dennis Farina), attempts to stop him from further investigations into his father’s murder, Hardy enlists the help of new partner Jo Christman, as he realises there may be a link between that and a new spate of homicides on women.

This movie, for me, has a dream cast list. Whilst I don’t think it’s the world’s greatest film ever, it is typical Bruce, an enjoyable action romp. What would normally have been an easily forgettable picture is so much more for the fact that it stars Pastorelli, Farina, Mahoney and Tom.

Mr Sizemore plays Jimmy’s brother Danny, and his character in this is just plain cool. Portraying a 20-something, ex-cop, still bitter about the death of his mother and brother, Tom’s performance is brilliant. From his initial angry departure to California, he returns, laid back but still slightly edgy. When asked what he found different about the city, his deadpan reply of “The Simpson’s is on an hour earlier” is bliss. Classic early Sizemore – Watch it! (Pun most definitely intended!!!)
