Enemy Of The State - A Review

A new thriller from Tony Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer, "Enemy Of The State" brings the full paranoia of technology and privacy to new heights. The film begins with the murder of a US Congressman ordered by Congressman Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight, always sinister) in order for his "Privacy Act," a bill which will enable the government access to, well, rightfully invade your privacy.

A Nature documentarian (Jason Lee) records the incident on tape and soon finds himself running from the NSA. During the chase, he bumps into old college buddy and attorney Robert Dean (Will Smith in his best role to date.) and hands him the tape without Dean knowing it. Dean has some problems of his own, namely in the form of mob boss Pintero (Tom Sizemore in an uncredited cameo and very funny).

Soon, Reynolds and the NSA are on to Dean, and begin a search for the tape and Dean's life by tracking him with systems so advanced that he can picked up by a satellite orbiting the Earth! The film gets more interesting when a mysterious man named Brill (the fantastic Gene Hackman) reluctantly helps Dean get out of the situation by turning the tables on the men who are trying to end Dean's life.

Sizemore only appears in two scenes, the first about ten minutes into the movie, the other near the end. His portrayal of Pintero is rousing and hilarious, and gives Will a run for his money in both scenes.

Many thanks to Scagnetti's U.S. representative Scott Perry for this review!
