After The Glory - A Review

I have to confess, I am usually pretty critical of ‘Made for TV’ movies, but ‘After The Glory’ is of a very high standard. Telling the story of a group of veterans returning home to find the town’s Mayor, Tom Cantrell, (G.W. Bailey, a man I will only ever associate with the ‘Police Academy’ series of films), is holding the town to ransom with bribes and payoffs.

Major George Meade, (Brad Johnson), a lawyer by trade, is immediately forced by his wife, father and Cantrell to turn his back on his fellow veterans and join the Mayor’s campaign by running for trustee.

Feeling betrayed, the remaining veterans start their own campaign as ‘The Veteran’s Party,’ attempting to overthrow Cantrell and make a change to the town. Running for Mayor, Jesse Meadows, (Tom), soon realises he is out of his depth and is forced to call in favours from his fellow veterans.

Tom’s character of Jesse Meadows is easily the most absorbing of the film and Tom’s portrayal of the man’s frustrations is superb, even down to the stammer, caused, we are informed, by a head wound he received while in service.

The film explores the problems the men had upon returning to their homes, both with public opinion and personal emotions. Although the film becomes quite oafish, with a siege, towards the end, it is still a very good film and worth watching for a great performance from Tom, if nothing else.
