Point Break - A Review

Not only the only surf movie of the ‘90’s that is likely to be remembered, Point Break is also the film that deserves to walk off with the ‘Crap Names For Characters’ award!

Johnny Utah, (Keanu Reeves), is the greatest footballer turned undercover cop ever. In an attempt to capture a band of surfy bank robbers who disguise themselves as ex-presidents, he joins forces with Angelo Pappas, (Gary Busey), the oldest, most unfit cop ever. The band of surfy bank robbers in question just happen to be led by Bodhi, (Patrick Swayze), who is, you guessed it……the wildest, craziest surfer ever!

Tom stars as DEA Deats, an agent working undercover in the group, who has his cover blown by Utah and Pappas’ morning raid on the surfers’ house. Whilst we see him for no more than two minutes, he is magnificently enraged. His hair is bleached and he is dressed as a total surf dude. As short as his performance is, it is still the only reason that most of us will be watching the film repeatedly!

As preposterous as this picture sounds it actually does have some very redeeming features. As well as the man himself, we have John C McGinley, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Lori Petty. The film is directed by Kathryn Bigelow and as far as Saturday night action movie romps go, this is pretty watchable stuff.
