The Relic - A Review

Dr John Whitney has transported several crates of Relics back to Chicago from Brazil by ship, destined for the Natural History Museum. Along the way someone or something has killed the entire crew and left the ship drifting off-shore. Upon delivery of the crates to the museum, evolutionary biologist, Doctor Margo Green finds them to be empty. When a night security watchman is found murdered, connections are made to the deaths on the ship.

Centred around police Lieutenant Vincent D’Agosta’s murder investigation at the museum, ‘The Relic’ is a strong horror thriller with superb performances form all those concerned. When a second murder takes place in the museum just as the guest begin arriving for a gala fund-raising event, panic sets in. The guests become trapped in the museum and it is left up to Lieutenant D’Agosta and Doctor Green to save the day.

Tom’s first proper leading man role as Lieutenant D’Agosta in ‘The Relic’ has proved to have been a wise move on his part. Not only has he won awards for the role; the review’s have been excellent and the box-office takings substantial. In the film, his performance is relaxed and confident. Leading lady Penelope Ann Miller also puts in a good performance, managing to avoid ‘screaming, girlie, Sandra Bullock territory.’

With more depth and intelligence than other recent monster flicks, such as the dreadful ‘Species’ movies, ‘The Relic’ should receive a little of your time.
