True Romance - A Review

"True Romance" is probably the most underrated film of the 90s. The film, directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino, is about how two young people, a comic book stor clerk and a call girl, fall in love. The action begins when her employer won't let her out of her job, and it never stops.

Christian Slater is great as Clarence Worley, a lonely comic book store clerk who has a love for Hong Kong cinema. It is at the theater where he meets Alabama (Patricia Arquette) and the two hit it off immediately. Clarence then discovers that she's a call girl hired to escort him for a night but she loves him, so they get married. The problem ensues when Drexyl (Gary Oldman in a fantastic cameo), Alabama's pimp, won't let her out of her job. This enrages Clarence, who gets up the nerve to kill him while picking up Alabama's clothes. However, Clarence accidently picks up a suitcase full of cocaine, and the two begin a trek to Los Angeles to get rid of the stuff. The cast is top notch, with a classic scene by Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken as Hopper, Clarence's father, is being questioned by mob boss Walken. Bronson Pinchot is funny as an actor who agrees to sell the cocaine to his boss, a big time, Joel Silver-like movie producer. In the end, the couple face some extreme challenges and, unlike Mickey and Mallory Knox, the two are decent people who just want out of the mess.

The supporting cast is a who's who of actors. Val Kilmer (although not seen) is the ghost of Elvis, Brad Pitt is hilarious as a stoned-out roommate of Clarence's friend (Michael Rapaport) and Samuel L. Jackson is in a cameo as the man who originally had the bag of coke. Out of all these fine actors, one that stands out is Tom Sizemore as an LA Narcotics cop partnered with Chris Penn as the two investigate the movie producer, and Sizemore gives some scene- stealing moments.

In conclusion, the film is one of the best this decade and is the starting point for some great careers, namely Pitt, Jackson, and Sizemore.
