Where Sleeping Dogs Lie - A Review

I must admit...I wasn't quite sure *what* to expect from this movie. And the title is a bit deceiving. But, upon seeing the opening credits...Where Tom Sizemore is listed 2nd (finally!)..I knew this would be right up my "reviewing alley"!

The story revolves around Bruce (Dylan McDermott..not to be confused with Dermot "My Best Friend's Wedding"Mulrooney...and who is listed first in the credits, to my dismay!). Anyway, Bruce is a tortured writer (aren't they all) and moonlights as a real estate agent. He's really in the dumper-hasn't sold a manuscript or a home for awhile. He gets the chance to sell an old, decrepant home when he's evicted from his apartment. With nowhere else to go, he moves into said old home and finds out some startling information about his new digs.

An entire family was slaughtered there a few years before and the crime was never solved! The bodies never found! Light bulb time for Bruce-he'll write a book about the murders! He'll be rich and famous! (Is that every writers' dream?) Enter Eddie Hale, (Tom..I'll praise him later). He wants to rent a room from Bruce. Ok, so Eddie moves in and is oh so mysterious! Eddie and Bruce slowly forge a friendship..altho strained at first..they start discussing Bruce's writings.

But we all know that Eddie isn't what he appears to be-I first wondered if he was an undertaker or Jesus freak...what uptight clothes!-he had a soft,child-like demeanor. But as more of the story unfolds..woah,baby...Eddie just blows you away! I hate to be a spoiler...but I will..(hide your eyes now..look away from the screen). The more Bruce and Eddie delve into these murders, the more Eddie seems to know about them and how a serial killer operates..(but not in a Scagnetti sorta way)..he still plays it like an innocent kid. I almost wondered if he wasn't oxygen deprived as a baby...Bruce starts to question how Eddie knows so much and finds out that Eddie lied about his job...a super market manager..yea, right,in *that* trenchcoat?! Bruce, get a clue! Eddie's been up in his room, getting off on his bible and listening to a tape of the murders *he's* commited! (if you didn't want to know, you should have looked away when I told you to!)What a chiling, goose-bumpy,full-blown pyscho scene! Bruce finds this tape and now they both know that the other is on to them!

Bruce is torn (writers!) when Eddie says he'll help him with writing the book...Bruce will be "rich and famous at last!"...Bruce,:oh,um,er,OK!"(idiot) Eddie is telling him all these gory details of the crimes he's commited, even before this one...where the bodies are...you know, stuff only a wacked out pyscho killer would know...The guy is a real sicko-in one scene he was like a maniacal Jack Benny in a smoking jacket and he can do the lift one eyebrow move..too cool!-Bruce is realizing it(mad man in his midst) and he wants out of the deal.He calls the cops and they don't find a thing (LAPD...not known for being very thorough)Eddie has vanished(he said he would!)...Ok, I've ruined enough of this movie for you...I will not reveal the ending...except to say that this is the rare Tom doesn't die at the end movie!

But let's discuss the performances (re:above,Tom praise) - Dylan is good, but this isn't a Dylan website is it? Did I mention that Sharon Stone is in this? It's standard Sharon "I'm an ice queen,sex-pot" Stone fare.As for Tom-this guy rocks in this part! He is so sinister, but, in this weird,wide-eyed kid seeing Santa for the first time way.I really wasn't sure if he was the killer until the intense, tied up his own legs and looked crucified bedroom scene!

I can usually figure this stuff out,( I can!) but he really threw me on this one.(no,I'm not proud of my lack of figuring it out skills on this). Run out and rent this video if you wanna see classic Sizemore! And he doesn't die!!

Many thanks to Margi (‘Fargo’) Bartley for this fabulous review.
