Blue Steel - A Review

"Blue Steel" is a very tense action-thriller about a female rookie cop and a yuppie type businessman whose fascination with death gets him close to her.

Jamie Lee Curtis, in one of her best roles, is a rookie cop just assigned on the force. On her first night, she encounters a supermarket robbery (The robber is played by Tom Sizemore) and she reacts in an unprofessional manner, shooting the man six times. Ron Silver is the psychopath in the store who picks up Sizemore's gun and leaves, pending an investigation on her. She is suspended and begins to question her role as a police officer.

Meanwhile, Silver begins a methodical killing spree with the gun. It soon leads to Silver meeting Curtis, but when she suspects something wrong with him, he soon lashes out against her, bringing a physical and mental battle of wits and wills.

"Blue Steel" was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, one of a few female action directors out there. (She also directed Tom in "Point Break" and "Strange Days.") She is also one of the most talented, and this film is probably her best, full of suspense and action. Jamie Lee Curtis gives one of her best roles, and Ron Silver is great. Clancy Brown, as a detective, gives a solid supporting role.

Sizemore, listed in the credits as "Wool Cap," has a very small but very pivotal role. It was the last of his four roles in 1989, and developed a mutual respect with Bigelow, who casted him in two more of her films.
