New Edinburgh, Nova Scotia

New Edinburgh is a lovely small town population (1971) was 222. The town was founded by people of Scottish origin, thus the Scottish name.

In the year 1783 loyalist led by Samuel Goulsbury and Anthony Stewart, obtained grants of land on the west bank of the Sissiboo River. These loyalists were from the thirteen colonies, especially from New York & New London.

Upon arrival they divided the grant into 10 acres lots, surveying the town with a public square, a common and streets. Some acreage was also set aside fot the Anglican Church, a home for the minister and a school.

However, this was not to happen. There were some Acadian families already settled on these lots and they wre not about to move. Among them was Basile & Isidore Amirault.

The grant covered the lands occupied without hindrance for over 20 years, land cleared and upon where they build their homes. They could not legally be removed from their property.

Cereno Upham Jones, ESQ. took up the defense of the Acadians and as a result the grants to the Anglican Church were set aside and the settlers remained on their land which is still occupied by their descendants.
