DIVERSITY AND MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION I and II

A 4-8 credit Graduate Distance Learning Online Course Focusing on Inclusion, Bilingual/English Language Learners, Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles, and Multicultural Education

Classrooms today are far more diverse than heretofore, both nationally and locally. Students formerly in Resource Rooms and Gifted Centers are now integrated into the mainstream--which has undergone pressures to detrack. Our knowledge of how people learn has taught us about multiple variations in what works for individual students. In addition, our schools are now undergoing a dramatic demographic change with an influx of students who are learning to speak and read English.

In this course you will select from among numerous links and site choices to construct a TEACHING & DIVERSITY HANDBOOK* for your future teaching.

*Each of the four Units in this course is to have a separate section in your TEACHING & DIVERSITY HANDBOOK. The section is to be in two parts: A. Big Ideas & Essential Questions, and B. Resources and Strategies.

Each section should have both YOUR IDEAS and SELECTED, ANNOTATED Web sites. For instance, you might write “The site XXXX [http://www.xxx.com] gave me a different perspective on how to help students learn _____. It also cleared up for me something I was confused about, and that is what educators mean by __________.” Certainly you would want to elaborate more.

We are a nation of immigrants. Currently the largest and fastest growing segment of new Americans are those from Hispanic backgrounds. Our city schools, both locally and nationally, now average 50% Hispanic/Latino. The ethnic make-up of the teaching profession is hardly one-tenth of that (5% Hispanic).
