1) Set a date for quitting.

 

2) Remove cigarettes, chew, ash trays, smoking matches and lighters from your home, office, and car.

 

3) Keep a supply of low calorie snacks handy:

- sugarless gum

- pumpkin or sunflower seeds

- apple slices

- raisins

- dried fruit

 

4) Spend more time in places that don't allow smoking.

 

5) Tell everyone you're going to stop smoking.

 

6) Use gum or the patch.

 

7) Seek counceling if needed.

 

8) Learn how to handle smoke & stress - be aware of things that cause you to want to smoke:

- being around other smokers

- under time pressure

- getting into arguments

- feeling sad or frustrated

- drinking alcohol

 

9) Tell yourself out loud everyday that you're going to quit.

 

10) Distract yourself from the thought of a cigarette:

- talk to someone

- get busy with a task

- read a book

 

11) Reward yourself with the money you saved from not buying cigarettes:

12) Keep active:

- ride a bike

- write a letter

- listen to music

- excercise

 

13) Plan what you'll do instead of smoking.

 

14) Call a friend if you need help.

 

15) Develop a personal plan that works for you.
