- Smoking has been responsible for 16% of all
deaths in the U.S. each year.
- Cigarette smoking is the major cause of:
- emphysema
- lung cancer
- chronic bronchitis
- In 1988 U.S. Surgeon General reported that
nicotine is just as addictive as heroin and cocaine.
- A 'hit' of nicotine reaches the brain in seven
seconds, twice as fast as a syringe of heroin injected in the vein.
- Approximately 4.5 million youths age 12-17
were current smokers in 1995.
- The rate of smoking among youths age 12-17
was 20%.
- The majority of teenage smokers expect to
quit smoking within a year, but three- quarters of those who try to quit
are unsuccessful.
- A survey found that the proportional increase
in smoking is greatest among the eighth graders, who are 13 to 14 years
old.
- Cigarette smoking is always associated with
social success, sexual attractiveness, a healthier demeanor, exciting sporting
activities, a cool and tough image for boys, a slender body and liberated
spirit forgirls, rebellion and independence for both sexes, and so on.
- Cigarette smoking and marijuana smoking are
very highly correlated; cigarette smoking usually comes first.
- All forms of tobacco, such as cigarettes,
chewing tobacco, snuff, pipes, and cigars are habit forming.
- Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals.
