Leigh and I arrived at the show a bit late and missed the first band (American Flag), but were just in time for Sloan. I had come to see GBV, but by the end of the night I was convinced that Sloan put on the better show. They played well and put on a very fun show, switching off instruments at points during their set. Being an opener, they played a short set, including "the Good in Everyone" and "Losing California".
By the time GBV made it on stage I had lost interest in the show. Bob came out clutching a beer (not a pretty sight) and everyone around me had a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other while chanting. As the opening chords of "Teenage FBI" began, I could feel the disappointment creeping up my spine. I knew that I was not going to have fun when my eyes were watering from all of the smoke. Not to detract from GBV, because they did play a solid show, it is just that they could have done better if they were not trying to play the part of slacker lushes. Every other new song brought on a new beer (and a new beer to the woman in the front row, courtesy of Bob). I think Bob had his eyes closed most of the set. By the end of their first set, I was wandering upstairs getting ready to go. After a bad experience up there, I watched GBV go through "I Am a Tree", and then Leigh and I waited downstairs for Jennifer and Eran. At this point Bob must have been quite drunk because they were only playing portions of songs ("Bulldog Skin" and "Motor Away"), as well as playing "Teenage FBI" again.
Songs I remember GBV playing: hold on hope, the official ironmen rally song, don't stop now, I am a scientist, cut-out witch, surgical focus, and so on.
