This was my first show in two months, as well as the first one of 1999. Kent I had never heard before and the Cardigans I have been lsitening to for three years. Itai and I had planned to go to this show several weeks beforehand, but at the last moment Itai had to cancel because his sister was in the hospital. I met him at the 9.30 Club and we hung out until the doors opened, at which point he left. After getting in, I made my way to the front of the stage and stayed there the whole night. Kent was first...they were pretty good, kind of Smashing Pumpkins-esque with a lead singer that reminded me of Morrissey. The cardigans came out on time and started out with "Marvel Hill". The whole band was adorned in black clothes, and Nina also sported black eyeliner and an interesting looking belt. They stuck to new songs for the beginning of the set, and then played some songs off of "Life" and "First Band on the Moon" ("Carnival", Rise & Shine", "Sick & Tired", "Lovefool", and "Losers"). They ended their first set with a stunning version of "Hanging Around", and then came out to do three more songs, plus a final encore of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". I quickly got out so I could get the subway home. It was a nice night and a great show.
