This was officially my first show back in PA. I went alone and I was anticipating going to see the Mouse In Princeton the next night with my girlfriend (we didn't go because we couldn't find the Terrace Club). This was a pretty good show. Brom Bones was the first band and they were OK pop punk, nothing that special. Jizzy Speedwack was next. They were quirky, pop/rock type music, with a very inflective lead singer. The lyrics were very obtuse and the band was tight as hell. Dutchland Diesel was the third band and they were pretty good. They reminded me of Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Jimmy Eat World. In some cases, I thought they were JEW and this wasn't a bad thing either. I really enjoyed these guys. Styles Murphy was after them. They reminded me of a harder Built to Spill with a punk edge, and they were definitely the best of the opening bands, all of whom were local.
The band that I had come to see finally took the stage. Isaac was smoking a cigarette as they broke into their first song. The second song was a sublime version of "Trailer Trash", which totally tore up. Most of the first set contained songs from "Lonesome Crowded West" (which I did not have yet). The only other song I recognized was "Styrofoam Boots". They ended the first set with "Dramarama" and took a short break before returning with a brand new song and my favorite Mouse song, "Breakthrough". By the end of the night, Isaac had a small sore above his lip from attacking his guitar with his teeth in a couple of songs. An incredible show.
