Jack Drag/Cibo Matto

I heard about this show while I was still living in Maryland and anxiously awaited it from day one. About a week after I moved back I got my ticket and Saturday I headed down to Philly at about 6. We were all meeting at Sam & Shaina's apartment and we were planning to go to Sorted! afterwards. Sam was away in NYC for the day and Rebekah and Michelle were headed down by train. Unfortunately, on the way down, Rebekah sparined her ankle coming out of her house, so that put a minor damper on our night. Being her boyfriend, I doctored her well enough so that we all could enjoy the show.

We left the apartment around 10, after "Stand By Me" was over (one of my favorite movies) and got to the show before Jack Drag got on. Jack Drag made it on by 10.30 and started rocking out. They have 2 indie albums under their belt, as well as one major label release, too. Most of the songs they played were off of "Dope Box". The have a very distinct sound, kind of like 90's indie rock meets 60's rock. They played a good set...the perfect appetizer to Cibo Matto.

Cibo Matto finally made their way out to massive cheers. The beginning chunk of their set was new songs, from the upcoming album in June. Miho and Yuka were there, as well as Sean, a drummer, and a crazy rasta beat guy. During the first set they also played "the Candyman" and "Know Your Chicken". Totally rocking! Miho was almost convinced that we didn't have any Philly soul until the front half of the room got down and danced the rest of the night. After the first set, they took a small break and came back to play some other new ones. We were waiting for this the whole night, but they waited for the last song to do it. Yes, it was "Birthday Cake". Rasta-guy got out of his corner and rapped some Miho on this one, it set the crowd wild. Eventhough, she had sprained her ankle, Rebekah decided to dance anyway (which she paid for later), but it turned out all good. The best show I have seen in awhile, by far. Cibo Matto is so full of energy.
