The Exploder/Pele/The Promise Ring

17 mar 00...the Ottobar Baltimore, MD

Being a cold night, Laini, Maddie, and I dressed warmly and drove around Baltimore for around an hour trying to locate Davis Street. I had been here once before, but could not recall how to find it. Luckily a nice man was headed in that general direction and he drove us to it. Once we got inside the very packed Ottobar, we shedded all of those layers that the winter had thrust upon us. The club was bursting with energy and the Exploder was bounding off of one wall and all over. The three or four songs I saw were incredible, just barely harnessed energy that got to core of me. An excellent find.

Pele, from Milwaukee, was next. They were very different, rocking out instrumentally. They were very tight and right on the money, putting together a very cohesive set, reminding me of American Football without the vocals.

What can be said about the Promise Ring that hasn't already been said. They are four incredibly nice guys, and they play some really incredible music. Being the fourth time seeing them, I wasn't expecting anything totally out of the ordinary. The energy was there, Davey's lyric-synchronized motions were there, and the set list was relatively the same. The set began with "Happiness is All the Rage", and then went into "Emergency! Emergency!", "Why Did Ever We Meet", and "Deep South". Thye played for about an hour, doing one new song ("Electric Pink") and ending with "Things Just Getting Good". All in all, this was the best P-ring show I've seen yet. The crowd was on, the bands were on, and everything just clicked.
