I kicked out the jams and I was out of work, hitting the Schuykill Expressway for some post hardcore action in the city. I hadn't planned to go to this show, but Jack had called me at Rebecca's house the night before looking for someone to go with, so I volunteered. I arrived downtown about quarter to six and parked in my favorite parking garage before walking to the Church. Jack arrived a short time after to help me count scene points until the doors opened (they opened at 8.30, 2 hrs late). Michelle, Shaina, and Becky unexpectedly showed up, so we had some people to hang with during the show.
The Jazz June was the first to go on, a short time after the doors opened, and wasted no time showing the crowd how to rock. They are an area band and impressed me very much. Each and every song was fierce and driving, and they didn't show a sign of wear when they were finished. Make sure you pick up their newest album, it's a killer.
Between bands, we snuck outside to escape the claustrophobia and heat of the downstairs church, causing us to miss a good portion of Faraquet's set. Faraquet is from DC, and a prime example of that city's ever-evolving brand of music. I believe the bassist is a former member of Smart Went Crazy, although I do not know where the other guys came from. We were able to catch the final three songs, which were a little quirky, a little heavy, and very good, with tons of panache.
The Trans Magetti, from New Jersey, were next. Unfortunately, I did not like this band too much. They were way too heavy and fast for me, a prime example of New Jersy hardcore.
Burning Airlines finally made it to the stage to cap the night, and that they did. They played songs from their new album (the one I don't have yet) and mixed the set list up from the last times I saw them. "Carnival" was smooth and "Scissoring" was beyond excellent, as always. These guys know how to remain ferocious and melodic at the same time, and new bass player Mike fit in very well. All in all, a great night, and another fine perfromance from Burning Airlines.
