El Guapo/All Scars

I wasn't originally planning to go to this show because i had not heard
either of these bands before, but the night before I met this incredibly
cool and cute grrl online, so I decided to go this show with her. I met
up with her a little late and she turned out not to be an axe murderer,
so we headed to DCCD for this free! show. El Guapo was the first band to
go. I really liked them. They didn't rock out, yet they did not just
stand there and take up space either. The bassist was very spamastic,
dancing and jumping around while spitting his broken metaphors into the
microphone like he was empting his mouth of his morning Scope. The
guitarist was very subtle about his actions--he slowly caressed chords
out of his instrument before he would mangle the strings and rip out
noise like it was an unwanted object in his body. If anyone has a chance
to see these guys--do it. They are very talented and hopefully they will
be hanging around for quite awhile.
Next up was the All Scars, who are:
Chuck Bettis - vocals, percussion, trumpet.
Dug Birdzell - bass, silverware.
Brendan Canty - guitar, keyboard.
Jerry Busher - drums, trumpet.
They were very experimental and feature members from other DC bands. I
really liked them. All of the songs flowed into one another and they
were more like movements than actual songs. A lot of the songs were
without vocals, but those that had them were very distorted and warped.
Enjoyable, to say the least.
