I cruised down Connecticut Avenue with a vengeance. I was planning to get there on time and I was hoping that the rain wouldn't break through until the end. First, the Savage Boys and Girls Club and then the legendary Fugazi. Fort Reno was packed, more than usual, and the types of people there were much different, too. I was supposed to meet a bunch of people there, but I only met up with Chrissie. Savage Boys and Girls Club was a three piece, two guys and a woman. They reminded me of Bikini Kill from the Pussy-whipped era and I loved them. The lead singer overcame her obnoxious streak by being a talented guitar player and singer. I really liked them alot, they were original, noisy, and fast. They even did a Pylon cover and threw stuff into the crowd. Yay. They played a song called "Frat Boy", and the singer said that she hopes that no one out there was one of those. Yeah right, like half of the people there weren't frat boys. Fugazi took the stage to loud cheering from the hometown crowd. They introduced themselves, and then started off with "Break" and then went into "Do You Like Me?" and then "Merchandise". From that point on they explored the confines and horizons of experimentation. They went from pure noise to Thurston-influenced antics to a reggae meets math rock number. Fugazi know how to work the corners and hit the point straight on. Ian seemed distressed about something and Guy and Joe were bouncing around madly while Brendan was able to keep everything under control. The variety did not stop there; some songs had another drummer while that same guy also doubled on trumpet, too. After they left their own little experimental world, they surged forward with "Pole Position" and others, leaving the stage for a few and coming back to do a nice encore with "Target", "Bed For The Searching" and some more. If this is any indocation of what tomorrow will be like, Fugazi should totally rock out, as they did tonight. I wish every band were as dedicated as these guys.
