Oxygen Tent/Luna

07.30.99...Theatre of the Living Arts Philadelphia, PA

Whenever I read show reviews, I tend to like the ones with stories about the whole night rather than just the show. This is going to one of those reviews. Fridays tend to be long, busy days for me. I wake up for work at 6am so I can make it to work for 7.30am (I live 30 mins away from Reading, where I work). I was about to leave work until I realized that I forgot a book for class, so then I had to run back inside, grab the book and the get to the train station by 4.45pm and it was 4.10. It takes 50 mins. Damn working so far from home! Anyway after missing that train, I decided to start using the stop in Paoli instead of Whitford eventhough Whitford is closer by 10 mins. Paoli is more convient, with an easier location and more times. To get to the end of this pointless story, I got the 6.30pm train to Suburban Station and made it to the TLA by 7.45 to get my ticket and hang around South Street till the show started at 9pm.

It was a total mystery as to who was opening for Luna. For weeks the city paper had said it was AM60 (whoever the hell they are), but by the time I had arrived at the TLA, I saw two other flyers that listed two other bands. Oxygen Tent, from Atlantic City, NJ were the openers and I was pleasantly suprised by them. There were some fruity guys next to me (as in nutjob fruity) who started talking to me. We figured out that we lived really close together, they in Honey Brook, me in Morgantown. I think we'll have to hang soon. Oxygen Tent played some really good, up pop in the same vein as Poole and Itai's mom's band. I totally dug them. Best of all, after their set, Michelle came and saved me from the nuts from Honey Brook (thank you, Michelle).

Luna took the stage fairly slowly, but played an all out good set that spanned all of their albums. I am not that familair with their material, but I did recognize "California (All the Way)", "Superfreaky Memories", "Bewitched", and their cover of "Sweet Child O' Mine". After the first set, they came back for a short encore. I was suprised at the amount of kids there, the show was close to or did sell out. It's a shame that their US label dropped them.

Afterwards, Michelle walked me to the train station, but we were poking around until we realized what time it was and that my train came in five minutes. I started panicking, and once we got there she waited at the steps while I ran down to catch, and miss the train. I came back up the stairs and ended up spending the night at her house. In the end, I wasn't mad about missing the train, I thought it was kind of funny though.

A pic of Dean taken by me.
