After missing the 'Chunk this past winter when they did a show at the Black Cat in DC, I was anxiously awaiting when I would get to the Troc. I had off of work (being the summer, I really had nothing to do) and my car was getting inspected. Once I found out my car was finished, I jetting to the garage and a short time later, jetting to the city for the show.
A friend of mine, Kyle, was supposed to be coming to the show, and he arrived a short time after I did, with a small group of his friends. The first band, The Bigger Lovers, were a local band and were decent. They played that indie pop thing that is popular with the kids these days. They were no Poole or Fountains of Wayne, but they cut it. I would be interested to see them again. They relatively well known and much heralded Rock*A*Teens were up next, but I didn't think they were that special. I tried, but could not get into them.
Capping off the evening was the mighty Superchunk. This was the first show of their current tour. Jim joked that the first night was always the worst, but we were soon proven wrong in a big way. They started out with "So Convinced", off of the "Come Pick Me Up". I am kind of foggy on what came next and in what order they came in, but I'll list which hits they played: "Hello Hawk", "Smarter Hearts", "Watery Hands", "Hyper Enough", an energy-filled version of "Animated Airplanes Over Germany", "Package Thief", "Driveway to Driveway", "Cast Iron", "Punch Me Harder", and then came back for a two song encore that consisted of one I did not recognize and "Martinis on the Roof". By far the best show I've seen this year.
