Silver Scooter/Super Furry Animals
09.17.99...Upstairs at Nick's Philadelphia, PA
|
This was a good night, albeit a bit frustrating. I decided to drive as opposed to taking the train because the doors opened at ten and I was guessing that Silver Scooter wasn’t going to be on until 10.30 or so, and I ended up getting caught in traffic for 45 minutes. A few minutes after getting there, I met up with Doug and Maria, who were on the guestlist. Doug has interviewed them earlier in the evening and was able to score a T-shirt and an album. I’m sure the pics Maria took are better than mine. Since Nick’s is 21 and up, we devised a plan so I could get in. I gave Maria my money, and Doug used me as his “plus one”, since they wouldn’t card they people on the guestlist. We were surprised that they carded Maria because they are so lackadaisial about that sort of thing. We got upstairs and Silver Scooter made it on around eleven. I really liked them, they had a rough indie rock sound down. I had previously heard them on a split with Cursive some time ago. Excellent, tight set, although I felt kind of bad that they didn’t have a place to stay that night. I hope they found somewhere… The Furries made it to the stage after midnight, and started out with a dancey number before kicking into their demented Welsh pop stylings. The set consisted mostly of “Guerilla” songs, including the current single, “Fire in My Heart” (which had a great video on 120 Minutes). They finished their set with “The Man Who Don’t Give a Fuck” (and didn’t play “Something 4 The Weekend”), and let some electronic noise trail off into the night. I can’t wait to see these guys again. I talked to Gruff after the show and he said to keep an eye out for some other Welsh bands to come to the states soon, such as Catatonia and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci.
