Since first hearing about this show in August, I was excited beyond belief at the prospect of seeing SDRE i concert. If you dont know the histiry, SDRE broke up in 1995 before releasing their second album, which followed up the landmark, "Diary". During the interim, their legend grew immensely, and when word started spreading about a possible reunion, internet newsgroup and real fans started speculating about a tour and what the new album would hold. Nonetheless, what it all boils down to is the music, and thats what I love SDRE for. "Diary" is beautiful, "LP2" is choppy, yet has its moments, and "How It Feels to be Something On" is possibly one of the best albums of the '90's, and that is why I was more excited for this show than any other in recent months. I left work right at 5 and walked up to the White Flint station with Tony, and then headed down to the U Street Station, arriving at the 9.30 Club at 6. Andy met me there about twenty minutes later and we were basically the first ones in line. Doors opened at 7.30 (on time, i might add) and we all filed in, snatching glimpses at the stage and our very own t-shirts to proclaim our love for SDRE. Andy and I met up with a fairly large group of friends (mostly his) as we headed up to the front of ths stage. Gloritone took the stage. They were good, but it was totally not my thing. It seemed like Everclear meets the Foo Fighters. MK Ultra were next, and they taught Gloritone how to rock. Each song showed me something new about the rock and roll format, plus the lyrics were pretty damn good, too. At long last, Sunny Day took the stage. The moment everyone was waiting for was there...the crowd was in awe. A couple people were holding up signs requesting "48", which Dan insisted they needed to learn, and they immediately powered into "In Cirlces", sending the crowd into a fury. Next was "Pillars", the first song off of the new album. The first set was almost everything off of "How it Feels...", except "the Blanket Were the Stairs" and "Rodeo Jones". The highight for me was a stunning version of "the Sharks Own Private Fuck", my favorite song off of the new album. After much crowd cheering, they came back out to do, "J'nuh", "Roses in Water", and a crowd silencing version of "Days Were Golden". At the end of the final verse, Dan and Jeremy left the stage, letting only the bass player and William there, who kept it going until William only remained, stretching his drumbeats on for minutes. Total beauty...Hands down, the best show I have ever seen.
