I was stuck going to this show alone, but only a week earlier there was a group of four of us going. Andy, Jamie, and Itai all cancelled out at the last moment, so there I was going all alone. When i got there, several people were outside scrounging for tickets because the show was sold out. I sold one guy Itai's ticket for 5$ just to get rid of it. He was happy, I was happy, so it was all good. I was really looking forward to this show cuz I missed Elliott in Philly in April.
Quasi features Sam Coomes on keyboards (ex-Donner Party and Heatmiser) and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney) on drums. They are definitely a driving combination live, and Sam is fucking crazy on the keys. Janet is definitely one of the most top-notch drummers out there today. Most of the songs were very poppy and bouncy, yet they saved room for rocking out. Elliott also came out and backed them up on bass and guitar during their very long set. I managed to pick up an excellent Quasi shirt after the set, too. After some reshuffling, Elliott came out, backed up by Quasi. Sam and Janet are tough, doing two full sets in a row. The first song was off of "XO", which I was not familiar with yet. He played alot of songs off of "XO", as well as "Alameda", "Speed Trials", "Ballad of Big Nothing", and "Pictures of Me" off of "Either/Or". Most of the songs were a lot more rocking than their album counterparts. Since DC's metro system sucks, I had to leave the show early to catch the subway back. It was a great show from one of the great songwriters of the '90's.
