As soon as work was over, this very interesting night began. It was a Tuesday and Itai and I got off at 5. We were planning to meet up with Tom, and then Itai and him would meet Shannon at the Alanis show and I would head over to the Black Cat for the Built to Spill show, were I had also planned to meet Andy. Tom arrived at 5, and he started showing people his signed Shirley Manson photos (one of these will come in to play later on). Around 6, we left Border's to head downtown, and I was dropped off at the Black Cat before the doors opened. Once i got inside, I got my ticket and headed up to the front.
Free Range Pilgrim, a local group, hit the stage first. They were driving and brutal, very good. I enjoyed the entire set. Next up was 764-Hero, the band I had actually wanted to see above anyone else this night. They made their way to the stage, along with the newly added bassist. John looked like he needed a belt and Polly looked like a soccer mom. They started off with one from the new album ("Get Here & Stay") which I am not yet familiar with. They contiuned on that track for almost all of their set, until they finished with "Dragon", my favoriet song off of the "We're Solids" EP. A very good set. They are definitely not "emo" as all of the kids are tagging them these days, but they definitely are different. Built to Spill was next. Doug Martsch started into the first song and already problems had begun. His guitar pedals we're malfunctioning and he stopped the song several times to fix them, but to no avail. Ian (of Fugazi) helped Doug get up and running. He finished the first song, but the problems ensued. Unfortunately, it was time for me to leave because I had to meet everyone down at the 9.30 Club.
When I got there, everything seemed ok, and even after I was dropped off it all seemed cool, until the next morning....Apparently, Tom lost one of his Shirley manson pictures and blamed me and Itai for stealing it. Tom went to the length of calling me up at work and threatening me for it. The truth is I had no idea what happened to it and didn't care...oh well....
