Dan asked me a few weeks earlier if I wanted to go this show, and I agreed. I thought it would be nice to see Wilco. What I didn’t know was how good the Old 97’s would be. Dan and I got to the Trocadero to a large line and a sold out show. Once we got in, we met up with Doug and Sarah (a friend of Doug’s), and chatted for a bit. Once the Old 97’s hit the stage, they kicked into high gear playing a terribly ferocious set that left me speechless. I could not believe how much energy these guys had. The story about them being kicked off a tour with Whiskeytown for constantly upstaging them every night now rang true. I was worried with how Wilco would fare.
Wilco took the stage, and Jeff started singing the first few words in “Via Chicago”. Despite the first few songs being marred by sound problems, Wilco's set was as good as the Old 97’s. They played for around two hours, with two encores. The highlight of the night was during the end of “Misunderstood” when Jeff shouted “I want to thank you all…” several times while lunging forward into the audience while grabbing the mic, eventually kicking his shoe into the audience.
Rough, unordered setlist: I must be high, hotel arizona, outtasite (ouutamind), she’s a jar, summer teeth, I’m always in love, nothing’severgonnastandinmywayagain, when you wake up feeling old, plus an uncle tupelo cover. I know there were others, but I do not remember them.
