PJ FYI
This section was last updated on 21 Mar 2001
You know, one of the weirdest things about Pearl Jam fans is that they just love to abbreviate. I'm sort of sick of abbreviations myself, 'cause I had to put up with them all throughout my life as an air cadet. (The military is simply the King of the Abbreviates, bar none.)
To aid in the newbie's entry into the world of the Internet Pearl Jam community, I have decided to gather myself a little list of all of the acronyms, abbreviates and short hands I've heard over the years revolving around our favorite little band.
Enjoy... (And if I've missed a few, be sure to send 'em along.)
- ABITW - Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall', a song covered heavily during many of Pearl Jam's concerts. Also referred to as 'ABITWII', as in 'Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2'.
- AMPJ - alt.music.pearl-jam, a Usenet group.
- ATB - 'Around The Bend'
- ATY - 'All Those Yesterdays'
- BOJ - 'Brain Of J'. Sometimes referred to as 'BoJ'.
- BRY - 'Black, Red, Yellow'
- BYM - 'Believe You Me', an old song from Eddie's previous, San Diegan band, Bad Radio.
- DTE - 'Do The Evolution'
- EV - Eddie Vedder
- EWBTCIAST - 'Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town. Ed usually just calls it 'Small Town'. Makes things easier.
- GTF - 'Given To Fly'
- HTI - 'Hard To Imagine'. More commonly, HtI. (Notice the little 'T' - important!!)
- JA - Jeff Ament
- JI - Jack Irons
- L2L - Live On Two Legs. Also seen occasionally as LOTL or LTL.
- LK - 'Last Kiss' (and never, ever Larry King)
- LY - 'Light Years'
- MC - Depending on who you're talking about, it's usually either Matt Cameron or Matt Chamberlain. (Usually Cameron, though.)
- MFC - Many Fans Converging, the Five Horizons' message board. Once based on a script program from Matt's Script Archive, it can now be found in Excite Communities. 'MFC' is also, of course, a Pearl Jam song.
- MM - Mike McCready
- MOM - Music For Our Mother Ocean, a benefit album featuring a Pearl Jam cover of the Silly Surfer's 'Gremmie Out Of Control'. (Note: Pearl Jam did not contribute to MOM 2, and have contributed 'The Whale Song' to MOM 3.)
- MSG - Madison Square Garden, 'cause "you ain't shit 'til you've played the 'Garden."
- MW - Monkeywrench Radio, aka MWR, aka Self-Pollution Radio. Monkeywrench is also the name of a band with some close connections to Pearl Jam -- Mark Arm and Steve Turner were both members of Green River with Jeff and Stone.
- NAIS - 'Nothing As It Seems'.
- NFY - 'Not For You'. I've also seen it as NFU and N4U, but it's pretty rare.
- NT - "no text". This one is actually more of an Internet thing altogether, and means that a newsgroup/message board contains no text, as the subject header is self-explanatory. People always ask about this on the Five Horizons' message board, MFC.
- NY - Da Man himself, the Grand-daddy of Grunge, the King of Feedback, Neil Young.
- PT - either 'Present Tense' or Pete Townshend. ('Nuff said.)
- RITFW - Neil Young's classic, 'Rocking In The Free World', often covered by the band.
- RVM - 'Rearviewmirror'
- SG - Depending on the context, this may refer to Stone Gossard or Soundgarden.
- SIFL - 'Save It For Later', an English Beat song. The Who used to cover this song back in the day, and since the Randall's Island show in '96, it can often be found tagged to 'Better Man'.
- SOH - 'Sleight Of Hand'
- SOLAT - 'State Of Love And Trust'. Also seen occasionally as SoLaT or SOL&T.
- STBC - 'Spin The Black Circle'
- SVT - Single Video Theory
- TFC - The Tibet Freedom Concert, an annual event Pearl Jam usually attends every second year.
- TKAA - 'The Kids Are Alright', a Who tune that Ed covers quite a bit. The whole band has done it a few times, but it's usually Ed solo.
- TOTD - Temple of the Dog
- TYAAM - 'Throw Your Arms Around Me', a Hunters And Collections song sometimes covered by the band during shows, often by Ed solo. It has also been tagged to a few songs now and again.
- VFC - Voters For Choice, a pro-choice rally attended by the band this past tour.
- VHC - Vitalogy Health Club, Pearl Jam's official fan club. Also known as the Ten Club.
- WPB - West Palm Beach, FL. Pearl Jam played a few shows there this summer, and a lot of people have been talking about it, hence the inclusion here.
- WWC - Wellwater Conspiracy, one of Matt's side bands.
- WYA - 'Who You Are'
- YL - 'Yellow Ledbetter'
That's really all I can think of at the moment. If there are any amendments or additions, by all means, email me.
