CHILD CRAFT
Raising a child in the Pagan way can be a difficult thing in today's world.  This page is for the children and their parents who have chosen to walk this path.  Submissions of ideas, advice, workings, experiences, etc. are always welcome.

Yule Tree

I used to get mad because I didn't have some of the neat stuff for Yule that other kids had for Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza.  Like the candy cane counter or chocolate Advent calendars.  Then my mom came up with a really cool idea.  We call it the Yule Tree.  It helps me keep track of the days until Solstice and was really fun to make.
First you get some thick green felt.  The big kind that comes on rolls at the fabric store.  My mom said it took about 1.5 yards of 36-45 inch wide felt.
You cut out the shape of a pine tree.  Like picture 1.  She used a little rectangle of brown felt to make the trunk part and folded it in half to make a pocket on the front side.  That's where you keep the counting candles.
Second, you glue big sequins on the tree for the lights and balls and some bead strings if you want.  Like picture 2.
Third, you cut candles out of felt.  Mine are white with yellow flame parts.  And you glue a little piece of the hooky part of velcro on the back so it will stick to the tree.
Fourth, you make a yellow star for the top of the tree and put hooky velcro on the back of that too.
Every night, before I go to bed, I get to put one candle on the tree.  On the night before Yule, I put the star on the top of the tree.

Another thing my mom and dad do is that I have Yule with them and our witch friends.  Then I get a little present in my stocking everyday until Xmas when I get to open the presents from my grandmas and grandpas and people who aren't witches!  It's cool because our holiday lasts a really long time and is really special.
I hope you have a good time this year.
